The Privy Groupe, with event partner Chase, set an exceptionally high bar in the first of a series of Perfect Pairs bespoke luxury dinners last Saturday in Los Angeles. Bringing together the complex, intricate flavors of Chinese cuisine with expertly-crafted, high quality wines collected from the world’s finest vineyards, the Privy/Chase Perfect Pairs luxury dinner proved groundbreaking in its revelation.
With much Chinese cuisine yet to be explored in a fine wine and food pairing scenario, the door remains wide open to suggestion for wines that bring out the best of the flavors, spices, and proteins characteristic of this revered culinary category. The Privy/Chase event provided landmark selections that earned star status as wine pairings for a number of traditional, elegant Chinese dishes.
Gallery ALL owner and Privy member Vince Yu Wang invited guests to walk the red carpet runway en route to this carefully curated food and wine dinner, while basking in their Gallery ALL’s stunning contemporary space at the iconic Bradbury Building. The distinctive modern furniture designs of the Gallery ALL proved a fabulous backdrop for an East/West dialogue among the honored Privy/Chase guests.
Among those in attendance were a number of LA media execs and personalities, including YouTube fashion favorite Chriselle Lim, Taiwan singer Christine Ko, Linkin Park turntablist and film director Joe Hahn, Pursuit of Happyness and Hitch executive producer Teddy Zee, and LXD: Legion of Extraordinary Dancers producer Heiu Ho. LA Magazine food columnist and Kamikaze Kitchen host Eddie Lin, Destination Luxury Publisher David Lee, and LA Weekly and KCET Food Columnist Clarissa Wei were also in attendance, ensuring expert commentary on the exquisite range of courses and pairings. HGTV Designstar’s Juli Khuu, China personality and author Joy Chen, Bring It On and Lovely Bones star Nikki Soohoo, MyIntent founder Chris Pan, and Hawaii Five-O’s Brian Yang added extra lustre to the list of attendees.
Settling in for a sumptuous, six-course meal prepared by JOSS’s award-winning Chef Golo Kwokson Yu, and fine, rare wine selections from Certified Court of Master Sommelier Alice Hama, guests found the energy balanced and harmonious, an expert blend of yin and yang in the dynamic flow of the evening.
As Chef‘s culinary masterpieces were set in front of guests, Ms. Hama carefully and thoughtfully explained the nuances and considerations involved in each wine selection for every course. Her insightful discussion enhanced enjoyment of the wines at the Perfect Pairs dinner, adding helpful guides to direct guests in designing their own Chinese dinner and fine wine pairing experience. Assisting Ms. Hama, the witty and charming Welly Yang, known for impressive roles in Miss Saigon and Aladdin, emceed the evening’s events.
Their delicious non-food treat between the third and fourth courses gave guests a taste of the wonderful vocal gifts of Aladdin and Miss Saigon star Welly Yang, in tandem with Les Miserables and Miss Saigon sensation Dina Morishita. These Broadway stars performed a duet from Les Miserables, then finished with a deeply moving and rich melding of voice in “Come to Me” and “The Prayer,” enviable by even by such divine vocal talents as Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli.
