Privy Hennessy VIP Tasting Event in Los Angeles

By Privy Editor

Sipping five hundred dollars’ worth of cognac under the stars with good friends is how a handful of Privy members spent a recent autumn evening in LA. Hennessy (LVMH Group) hosted a private tasting event for a small group of Privy members at Xino, a new contemporary Chinese restaurant/lounge at the refurbished Santa Monica Place. Guests made our way through the sleek, glassed-in modern interior with Privy-colored accents and onto the outdoor patio to start off the festivities with some Hennessy Black mixers and appetizers. We enjoyed our drinks with shrimp dumplings, chicken lollipops, and other tasty treats, mingling and gazing out over the Promenade as the sun set. Some of the friends who came out for the occasion included Lisa Ling, Dr. Paul Song, Archie Kao, Teddy Zee, Joe Hahn, Ted Kim, Welly Yang, and Privy founder Stephen Liu.

Hennessy Brand Ambassador and Privy member Wayne Chang guided us through tastings of three different premium cognacs, instructing guests about the proper way to experience each spirit. Dr. Song raved about Chang’s ability to “educate us on the finer points of cognac,” claiming he was “blown away by the level of his expertise.” His wife Ling also had a really good time. “Learned things about cognac that I never knew before. Love when that happens,” Ling said.  Even Zee, not a cognac fan previously, was impressed by the presentation, confessing that “being taught the intricacies about how to taste and enjoy [the cognac] opened up [his] taste buds to a whole new experience.”

We started off with the powerful, woody Hennessy X.O, which featured hints of rich spices, sweet tobacco, leather, and dried figs. Next came the rare 130-year-old Hennessy Paradis, which seemed to explode with spices and peppery notes upfront but was softened by floral aromas and a sweet, smooth finish. We finished off the tasting with the ne plus ultra of Hennessys, the 200-year-old Richard Hennessy. Balanced and complex, the rich bouquet slowly released a succession of aromas: vanilla, spices, peppers, and delicately fragrant flowers. In the mouth, its refined texture revealed an extraordinary palette of spicy, fruity, and woody flavors. We were also pleased to taste a hint of mint and rose petals, notes not often found in cognacs.

Ted Kim said of the evening:”[It was] one of the best events I’ve been to in a long, long time; I can still taste the Paradis.” Zee agreed, calling it “an amazing evening to be with a group of likeminded people who enjoy the good things in life.” Archie Kao summed up the night well, calling it “the best of worlds colliding—really good friends, really good ambiance, and a really good cognac equal a really great memory.”
