Privy Hennessy VIP Tasting Event in San Francisco

By Privy Editor

The success of our LA Hennessy tasting last fall had members clamoring for invites. So we decided, why not take the party to San Francisco? Same idea—get Hennessy Brand Ambassador and Privy member Wayne Chang to share his expertise and take us on a journey of discovering how to experience cognac. Different group, different venue, different vibe. We took over a private room at the Crescent Hotel in Union Square with a still intimate but larger group than the LA gathering.

Guests included Jonathan Teo, general partner at General Catalyst; Stephen Chen, owner of Element SF and Privy-5-listed 5A5 Steak Lounge; Beverly Nevalga, president of Project by Project; Dean Yao, immediate past president of PbP SF; Bernard Moon, CEO of XS Groupe and Privy advisor; Alon Yu, owner of Privy/PbP listed Tommy Toy's Cuisine Chinoise; Lilian Lee, executive at DAE Advertising; Natalie Louie, Privy SF Ambassador; John Kim, managing partner at HighBar Partners; David Lee, partner at XG Ventures (ex-Googlers); Rebecca Hwang, co-founder of YouNoodle.com and a Chemistry and Physics Olympiad medalist for Argentina; Christopher Do, VP Investments at UBS and chairman of NAAAP SF; Dr. Edward Kao, chief of the Department of Radiology at Kaiser South SF; and Amit Aharoni, founder of Cruisewise.com.

The group was a good mix of civic leaders, venture capitalists, restaurauteurs, and entrepreneurs, which kept things fresh and interesting. Hennessy Black mixers and appetizers started off the evening, and Wayne took us home with detailed explanations of how to fully engage with each cognac we tasted—Hennessy X.O, Hennessy Paradis, and Richard Hennessy. Guests enjoyed the experience immensely, as Wayne enlightened their minds as well as their tastebuds.

Vera Chan-Waller, owner of Privy-5-listed restaurant Yank Sing, awarded a $100 gift certificate to Rebecca Hwang, who correctly answered the question of what year Hennessy was founded (1765). Jennifer Yen’s skincare line, Purlisse, furnished gift bags for the women in attendance, and William Lai
photographed the event.

The Crescent is also home to charming speakeasy-style bar Burritt Room, owned by the man behind Privy-5-listed Bourbon & Branch. After the tasting, we retired to the the Burritt Room’s main bar to sample some of their amazing drinks and continue our conversations. Yes, we were still in the mood to drink after the tasting!
