A Night at the Gallery-Asian Breast Cancer Awareness

They say it is better to give than to receive, and last Saturday, Privy Circle was at its best.

For one night only on Saturday, October 15th, Privy Circle, in conjunction with City of Hope, hosted “LEXUS NIGHT AT THE GALLERY,” a Fashion.Art.Music benefit to raise money for the National Asian Breast Cancer Initiative (NABCI). Privy Circle was able to raise over $12K for NABCI! In addition, we helped raise an addition $8K for City of Hope, thanks to a considerable donation from the Synn family

Asian breast cancer awareness has been an integral facet of NABCI’s mission since the initiative’s inception in 2013. This cause was personal to Privy Circle CEO Stephen Liu, whose own mother had been diagnosed with breast cancer -- but only after seeking a third opinion. One of NABCI’s goals is to dispel the notion that “Asian women don’t get breast cancer,” which seems to be unfortunately prevalent amongst U.S. doctors. Steve’s mother, fortunately, survived. So Privy Circle spearheaded the National Asian Breast Cancer Initiative to address these unique cultural, linguistic and biological challenges related to breast cancer that Asian women may face.

As part of its mission, this month NABCI has been leading a national #asianbreastcancer social media campaign. Our NABCI Advocates are a diverse group of influencers and organizations of note, with a reach of over 18M people, including Karrueche Tran, Kelly Hu, Ken Jeong, Megan Lee, Lisa Ling, the White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, Angry Asian Man, Kore Asian Media, Destination Luxury, Mochi Magazine, and Yomyomf. A full list of NABCI Advocates can be found here.

We would not have been so successful without the help of our generous sponsors, and in particular, our titular sponsor Lexus. With nothing short of the sophistication associated with the luxury car brand, our Privy Circle guests were greeted with a stunning white carpet leading from the impressive display of Lexus’s new flagship utility vehicle, the 2016 Lexus LX SUV, in a complementary white. Guests were able to admire the displayed vehicle upon their arrival.

The large-scale charity event took place at the Ace Gallery in Beverly Hills, which currently is adorned with spectacular pieces from artist Gary Lang, hailed by the Los Angeles Times as being “abuzz with electrifying energy.” We channeled this electrifying energy into our haute fashion show.

The must-see programming at “LEXUS NIGHT AT THE GALLERY” were the two runway shows by designer brands Stella & Jamie and FRANKIE. Sixteen models slinked down the white carpet runway against the dramatic backdrop of Lang’s centerpiece “Rising,” which is also the namesake for his exhibition at the Ace Gallery. “Rising” is acrylic on panel, a towering display 19 feet x 12 feet in magnitude, comprising of 24 panels.

As part of Privy Circle’s mission to connect the most remarkable Asians and Asian Americans together, Stella & Jamie and FRANKIE perfectly fit into that vision; both labels are created by Asian American designers: April Mun and Kevin Chen, respectively.

Stella & Jamie showed off their Fall 2016 line as well as unveiled their upcoming Spring 2017 line. April Mun received her credentials at the Fashion Institute of Technology and worked under the Italian master couturier Luciano Soprani. SoHo Style provided exquisite grey hair extensions worn by some of the models.

FRANKIE presented their Fall Winter 2016 line, which was inspired by famed director Jean-Luc Godard’s landmark drama, “Vivre sa vie.” Executive/Creative Chief Kevin Chen is a 30-plus-year veteran in the fashion industry, and started training in sewing factories from the age of 17.

The music portion of our Fashion.Art.Music event featured YouTube sensation Megan Lee performing her new single, “Stronger,” and former Broadway stars Welly Yang and Dina Morishita performing their signature “Prayer,” mesmerizing the audience. Yang also did a fantastic job of emceeing the event. In addition, we had the sexy musical stylings of DJ SHY creating the fun ambience before and after the show. She flew in from Las Vegas specifically for our event, where she is a resident DJ at the Marquee at the Cosmopolitan.

At the end of the evening, we were so graced to have Congresswoman Judy Chu on stage. She dropped by our event to present Congressional Certificates of Recognition to Privy Circle’s CEO, Stephen Liu, and the designers, April Mun and Kevin Chen.

Throughout the night, our liquor sponsors Johnnie Walker, Crown Royal, and Ketel One fueled our guests with bountiful libations at our open bar, with Tossware providing high end, disposable drinkware. Capturing the good times was Hashtag Photobooth, who provided official photos in front of the event’s pink carpet step-and-repeat. The photos were displayed on various 4K TVs provided by for the evening.

Privy Circle had a raffle with an abundance of prizes, and was also our bigest raffle prize sponsor for the evening. magnaimously donated five 55” 4K TVs (LeTV Super3 55 4K Smart TVs) and ten smartphones (Le 2 Superphones) for our great cause.

Our other raffle prize sponsors were Impressions Vanity Co., Alexander Wang, SoHo Style. Our grand prizes came from Harrah’s Resort and LA Phil. One grand prize was the “Livin’ It Up” package from Harrah’s Resort Southern California, which included a 1-night stay in a Deluxe Room, with 2 tickets to see stand-up by Martin Lawrence on October 29th, along with a $100 dining credit for any restaurant at Harrah’s Resort SoCal. The other grand prize was 1 pair of front row tickets to see renown Chinese conductor Long Yu at the LA Phil on December 5th, along with a $100 gift card to Patina to enjoy dinner beforehand. All raffle proceeds went directly toward NABCI.

We are so incredibly grateful for the evening’s turnout, and we couldn’t have done it without all of the entities and elements coming together. We’d also like to thank our media sponsors, Kore Asian Media, Destination Luxury, and Plate by Plate, as well as Lina So, Yoyo Deng, Kaila Yu, Michael Synn, Cyn Chen, Val Aguilar, Prestigious Models, and of course, the fabulous co-hosts for bringing this whole event together for #asianbreastcancer awareness.

Privy Circle believes in raising awareness and rallying support for issues important to our members and our community: we are successful, professional individuals who want to use our resources to affect positive change in the world. Our hope is that by leveraging our collective resources we can make a difference in our communities. #togetherwecanmakeadifference
