Celebrating the advent of the New Year is nothing if not sentimental in the extreme. The echoes of the past year vie for just as much attention as the hopes and dreams of the new, and 2011 was indeed a very blessed year for everyone at Privy, with numerous and quite memorable events to ponder with a great deal of nostalgia. It was with great pleasure and joyous anticipation that we were fortunate enough to begin honoring the upcoming year with so many wonderful members and guests.

While Lady Gaga launched the dropping of the ball in New York’s Times Square, and other celebrities were partying like rock stars in Sin City, we decided to hold Privy’s New Year’s Eve festivities in Los Angeles, in the entertainment capital of the world – Hollywood.

A Privy New Year's Rockin' Eve

As 2010 drew to a close, Privy rang in the New Year in style with A Privy New Year’s Rockin’ Eve. We celebrated a year filled with Privy Private Events spanning the East and West, the launch of the Privy 5 City Guides, and the re-design of the Privy website. We also took advantage of the opportunity to raise some money for a cause near to our hearts—that of Privy nonprofit partner LiNK (Liberty in North Korea). The intimate invite-only gala brought out close friends and family, with DJ Paris driving the music on the 1’s and 2’s. The scene of the debauchery was La Defence, which received a Privy makeover that transformed the space into a veritable winter wonderland of New Year’s glitz, beauty, and class. The silver-tongued Beau Sia orchestrated the midnight champagne toast and countdown with our friends Jeannie Mai, James Kyson Lee, Karin Anna Cheung, CS Lee, and the infamous cast of the upcoming K-Town Reality Show.

Privy Hennessy VIP Tasting Event in Los Angeles

Sipping five hundred dollars’ worth of cognac under the stars with good friends is how a handful of Privy members spent a recent autumn evening in LA. Hennessy (LVMH Group) hosted a private tasting event for a small group of Privy members at Xino, a new contemporary Chinese restaurant/lounge at the refurbished Santa Monica Place. Guests made our way through the sleek, glassed-in modern interior with Privy-colored accents and onto the outdoor patio to start off the festivities with some Hennessy Black mixers and appetizers. We enjoyed our drinks with shrimp dumplings, chicken lollipops, and other tasty treats, mingling and gazing out over the Promenade as the sun set. Some of the friends who came out for the occasion included Lisa Ling, Dr. Paul Song, Archie Kao, Teddy Zee, Joe Hahn, Ted Kim, Welly Yang, and Privy founder Stephen Liu.

One of our favorite pastimes here at Privy is discovering and sharing the best authentic local food experiences in each city—those hole-in-the-wall places that truly capture the culture and heartbeat of a specific locale. And what better place to mine for these diamonds in the rough than in a community of discerning, oft-homegrown diners? This issue we’re going to start you off with a few places that have already received some press, but we really want to hear from you about the best local foods in your neck of the woods. Yes, those nondescript places that make it just like your momma used to.

Emily Cho was introduced to me as the lady who “makes things happen”, so it came to me as a surprise that the brains behind the stunning $19 million ad campaign in 2007 for Korean Air, came from such an ingénue. But don’t let age fool you. Ms. Cho who masterminded the airlines largest ever global advertising coo continues to break down stereotypes as she heads the Integrated Marketing team for Korean Air with some of the most innovative marketing campaigns found in Korea.

For many people, defining their occupation is a one-word answer. But our modern globalized world has seen a proliferation of people who are not so easily defined. Their networks of connections mean that for these people almost nothing is impossible to accomplish. In many ways, such individuals are the heartbeat of Privy. So we jumped at the chance to interview Seoul-based member Stream Lee, founder of XStream Productions Global and the embodiment this phenomenon.

Say hello to Carl Choi, Privy member and a man who is helping to change the face of Asian and Asian American media/entertainment globally. He is the co-founder and CEO of Plan C Group, a network of companies that dubs itself "the Asian Lifestyle Company" and includes businesses in the areas of Nightlife & Events, Marketing Services, Entertainment Brand Management and Original Content Development & Production. Carl manages some of the biggest names in Asian entertainment, including Jin the MC, Daniel Wu, Van Ness Wu, and Far East Movement and is without peer in the scope of his vision for the next generation of Asian entertainers. Needless to say, we were chomping at the bit to learn more about Carl's journey and to hear his thoughts about the future of Asian entertainment.
