Celebrating the advent of the New Year is nothing if not sentimental in the extreme. The echoes of the past year vie for just as much attention as the hopes and dreams of the new, and 2011 was indeed a very blessed year for everyone at Privy, with numerous and quite memorable events to ponder with a great deal of nostalgia. It was with great pleasure and joyous anticipation that we were fortunate enough to begin honoring the upcoming year with so many wonderful members and guests.

While Lady Gaga launched the dropping of the ball in New York’s Times Square, and other celebrities were partying like rock stars in Sin City, we decided to hold Privy’s New Year’s Eve festivities in Los Angeles, in the entertainment capital of the world – Hollywood.

Patrick Chun interviews NY1's Michelle Park

For most of us, places like Lavo and Milk&Honey represent the pleasures of living in New York City, part of the allure that drives us to transplant to NYC, and a big aspect of why we find it so hard to leave. We go to these venues to celebrate, to escape work, to live in a world a bit outside of our daily grind. For the majority of us, we trade our hard-earned dollars for a taste of the sweeter life.

And then there’s Michelle Park, anchor and food/entertainment beat reporter for NY1, the local news channel covering New York City. Michelle makes her living reviewing these venues, covering their owners, and sharing their backstories- for Michelle, partying and eating are part of her daily “grind”. Having covered food and entertainment for over six years in New York, Michelle is a walking repository of knowledge all things fun in New York City, not to mention probably one of the luckiest winners of the occupational lottery.

I caught up with Michelle outside her hometurf in Boston (where she was attending pork-connoisseur festival Cochon555) to talk NYC entertainment, her favorite Asian-American trendsetters, and how one goes about becoming a food and entertainment journalist in New York City.
