Occupation: CEO of United Asia Management

Based in: Seoul

Last Education: Oklahoma City University

Young Beom Jeong is an accomplished talent agent who founded a global mega agency called United Asia Management. With ‘Hallyu’ or better known as the ‘Korean Wave’ becoming a significant factor in Asia’s entertainment market, six major agencies, which include KEYEAST, AM Entertainment, Star J Entertainment, SM Entertainment, YG Entertainment, and JYP Entertainment, were brought together by Young Beom Jeong to form UAM with the goal of supporting their artists to enter the global entertainment market. UAM is a super-agency that helps to push forward the careers of Korean artists to advance overseas while at the same time, seeks talented artists from other Asian countries to work in Korea. Most of the talent managed by the six agencies and members of UAM have successfully become a significant force in the Asian market and include popular artists such as AM Entertainment’s Jang Dong Kun; KEYEAST’s Bae Yong Joon, Kim Hyeon Jung, Choi Kang Hee, E Ji-ah; SM Entertainment’s TVXQ, Girls’ Generation, Super Junior; YG Entertainment’s Big Bang, 2NE1, Se7en and JYP Entertainment’s Rain, Wonder Girls and 2PM.

UAM is opening its doors to all artists Korean or non-Korean who are currently active or willing to enter the Asian entertainment market with a vision to go beyond the Korean Wave and create an ‘Asian Wave.’

We sat down with Young Beom Jeong, the CEO of UAM, for an interview and discussed what UAM means to him.

1.   UAM consists of three singer-focused agencies,SM, YG, JYP and three actor-focused agencies, KeyEast, AM Entertainment and Star J Entertainment. How did all six agencies get together and start UAM?

One of the reasons why people from Hollywood are leading the world of entertainment is that they are fluent in English, which is widely used throughout the world. Unfortunately, the Asian entertainment industry has been undermined because of the language barrier. The important factor is to have a “United Asia” which is the key for business. Asia has a variety of cultures and its cultural self-esteem is strong enough to build one large entertainment market. We, all six agencies, didn't gather only for Korean cultural development, but also to advance Asian entertainment business as a whole.

2.   Do you think agencies from other countries in Asia can join UAM?

Of course. We are planning to cooperate with agencies from Japan, Hong Kong, China, Thailand, Taiwan, Malaysia, and other Asian countries. Our goal is not limited to Korea but spreads out to Asia. Creating an efficient system is fundamental to achieve this. UAM can pave the way for other major Asian talent agencies not only from the US but also from other Asian regions including China, Japan, Singapore and Malaysia.

3.   What was the motivation for you to launch UAM?

I had worked at the "Pusan International Film Festival" for a while. In 2006, the producers' workshop was held by the Asian Film Market and it was about international casting between Asian countries. In addition, a booth was arranged to run a sales promotion in the form of a consortium. I conceived the idea of a similar structure for UAM and earlier this year, I realized it was time to start a similar project for actors, singers and other artists who are actively working outside their own countries. With some other people from the other five agencies, we started working on this project with the hope of helping actors, singers, writers, directors, and producers to enter the global market more effciently.

4.   How did six different agencies build the same goal? It must have been very difficult since each agency have their own objectives.

I first suggested the concept of UAM to representatives of each agency, and was surprised at the fact that I was not the only one who thought of the idea of UAM. It was not hard to agree on the others’ opinions at all since we had all wanted something like UAM. We all became good friends.

5.   How is UAM different from agencies in Hollywood?

It is not much different. Hollywood's management system was launched in early 20th century, and the concept of agency was built in the early 1970s. It took 70 years. The management system of Korea started only around 20 years ago and it only took 20 years to build the agency business concept in Korea. I think we are moving forward with a good speed.

6.   What's the first plan for UAM?

We will gather the databases of each agency and build one consolidated, united database. The database information of the artists will include their schedule and their media preferences such as film. I think this process will take about a year.

7.   You founded "Star J Entertainment" in 1994. Artists from your agency are often characterized by being different from others and it always makes them very successful. What's your secret to finding someone very special and unique?

I have read lots of books since when I was young. My parents put me in a library when they wanted to punish me. I was just bored at first but then I started reading books as time went by. The knowledge I obtained through all this reading became unwittingly helpful for me to help choose.

8.   What takes up most of your busy schedule at this moment?

UAM is not the only thing that I am interested in right now. I am interested in a lot of other areas. However, I concentrate on UAM for now while spending a third of my day playing, a third sleeping and the other third working on UAM. This helps to maintain my daily rhythm.

9.   What do you think of Privy and the promise it offers?

One of the reasons I started UAM was to provide a larger network of contacts to help promote Asian artists. Privy is a great network that helps to connect like-minded successful people and will prove to be very useful in helping to establish relationships and opportunities that otherwise may not have been available.
