Privy 5 New York American Comfort Food
Every country has its own comfort food, this is derived from the food we grew up with - it has a sense of nostalgia and is familiar. In the US this may be classics such as mac and cheese, French toast, French fries, milkshakes and pudding. In this city, classic American meals are easy to find and as good if not better than you remembered them.

Near Madison Avenue and East 23rd Street Southeast corner of Madison Square Park New York City NY 10010+1 212 889 6600When it comes to ice cream, hamburgers, or hot dogs, nobody does it better than Shake Shack. Shake Shack is a hot spot, has a notable chef, and is kid friendly. Danny Meyer, the "Yoda" of Shake Shack is responsible for this all-American snack-bar grub, but be prepared to queue or fast the whole day and go late in the afternoon. Then sample everything on the menu. Start with a purple Grape Crush co ... read more > -

119 Seventh Avenue New York City NY 10021212-414-1255The brain-child of Mark Thomas - Cafeteria, situated in popular Chelsea, started off shaky, but has found its footing and patrons can't get enough of the croissant French toast, mac 'n cheese (3 types), meatloaf and chicken pot pie. Locals are finicky and staff here, run a tight ship. Cafeteria is good for breakfast lunch and dinner, is both hip and comforting; the milk shakes are thick and the de ... read more > -

Free spending bon-vivants frequent this comfort food zone and Madonna hosted young Lourdes Leon's surprise 13th birthday party here. They specialize in traditional toothsome eats such as corned beef and pickles, blintzes, beef stroganoff and chopped liver, serve ... read more > -

113 St. Marks Pl (between 1st Ave & Avenue A) New York NY 10009(212) 614-2728New York; not Chicago, and definitely not LA, is the centre of the hot-dog universe and Crif Dogs, owned Brian Shebairo, proves this. These hot-dogs are not steamed, they are deep fried in vats of oil, and when you get them they glow with an almost kryptonite-like appeal. This locks in the rich dog flavor which explodes with fragrant steam as you bite into it. Crif Dogs can be purchased for a few ... read more > -
