If this Upper West Side Indian restaurant has one failing it's a rather bland and uninspiring ambiance. The décor could certainly do with a bit of attention as could the lighting but that's the end of the bad news. The story gets better and better once you get around to ordering. The food is excellent, hearty, authentic Indian fare and the kitchens always ready to make changes to suit individual tastes. Tamarind serves an outstanding Chicken Tikka Masala and their vegetable dishes are typically among the best you'll find anywhere. Other noteworthy Tamarind standards include a very good Rogan Josh, a sumptuously creamy Nargisi Kofta and one of the best interpretations of the often jaded Chicken Biryani you'll find in the city.
