Khaosan Restaurant in Hongdae transports diners back to Thailand with their food and the very Thai restaurant ambiance. The first level of the restaurant is adorned with photos from Thailand and Thai trinkets and souvenirs. The walls are accentuated with bamboo as well as the spiraled stairs leading to the 2nd level. The 2nd floor of the restaurant is more of a lover’s lane where couples dine intimately while watching the crowd go by the busy street below through the bamboo decorated glass windows. Food at Khaosan are served surprisingly quick, mostly within five to ten minutes of placing your order but the quality of the dishes convey that more work has been put into creating the spicy yet not too overpowering food. This shows how much expertise the native Thai chef brings onto the plate. The triangular shaped spring rolls are wonderful. The spicy shrimp soup called tom yum kung and the stir fried curried crab called poo pad pong kari are excellent appetizers. The chicken in coconut milk soup has many layers of great flavors as well as the fried noodle pad thai dish that is eye-watering spicy. Khaosan restaurant owner Lee Jung-im says that the secret to their covetous recipes is that all ingredients are shipped directly from Thailand which brings all the more authenticity to the flavor of the scrumptious food they make.
