Koong is a busy restaurant off of Gwanhun-dong in the artsy Jongno area. It is right next to the Kyung-In Art Gallery. Seventy five years ago, grandma Lim, a strong-willed 94 year old lady, founded the restaurant shortly after migrating from Kaesong to South Korea because of the war.  Her grand daughter Sin Bu-won helps grandma Lim run the business and preserve traditional Kaesong dumpling dish recipes. A huge photo of the two ladies and a few other framed native writings adorn the white walls of the neat and simple eatery. Stars on the Koong menu include the Kaesong dumplings and the Choraengi dduk which has pearl shaped rice cakes in savory soup. Beef and vegetables are boiled for twelve long hours giving the soup broth many layers of flavors. The dumpling filling has meat, tofu, scallions and bean sprouts inside. The rice cakes have very soft chewy texture and the dumplings have more than enough of the beautifully seasoned meat in the middle. Another dish worthy of praise is the black-pig pork served bundled in kimchi leaves. Enjoy dumplings and other Kaesong regional dishes at Koong restaurant and learn a little bit about Korean history.
