Privy 5 Overview

The names Toriyasu and Yakatori work hand-on-hand at this discrete izakaya from the moment you open the door. For good food and good cheer Toriyasu is legendary in Shanghai with both locals and visiting Japanese, so you know the food is fantastic. Festive strips of fluttering paper cover the walls, announcing the specials, and the grilled chicken skin skewers (their claim to fame) are heavenly. There’s more than snack food served here, however, and it has a great reputation for Japanese cuisine served in an informal setting. So informal that you may miss it if you're not looking hard enough. The authentic Japanese feel to the place may convince you you’re a lot further south than you actually are. Beer is available to enjoy alongside your meal. The venue is quite small, but it’s popular, so conditions can get cramped. It might be a good idea to reserve a table ahead of time. As something that’s akin to a wine bar, the great news is it’s open until very late. This restaurant is worth making the effort to find, reservations are necessary and don’t bother with the Platinum Diners card, it is cash only!
