Committee of 100 Mentoring & Leadership

It’s fun talking about how Asian Americans are portrayed in the media and debating the merits of the roles actors choose. While performers might not choose to be our community’s most visible role models, it’s something they just can’t escape. So when prominent API role models from the fields of business, politics, law, and non-profits commit to serve as mentors, it’s definitely worth noting.

Saturday, July 9 marks the kickoff of the 2011 – 2012 Southern California Region Committee of 100 Leadership and Mentoring Program featuring a panel discussion with California State Controller John Chiang, Hollywood producer Julie Fong, CEO of Mega Toys and Center for Asian Americans United for Self Empowerment Board Chair Charlie Woo, and President of Asian Pacific American Legal Center Stewart Kwoh.

C100 is a non-profit group composed of about 160 members drawn from the Chinese American community who have achieved a level of prominence in their respective fields. The organization’s mission is to encourage constructive relations between the people of the US and Greater China as well as promote the full participation of Chinese Americans in all fields of American life.

What I enjoy most from my membership in C100 is the opportunity to regularly meet with a group of accomplished individuals I truly admire. Affording the next generation of potential leaders the same kind of access would surely be a unique and rewarding experience. The event would provide such a setting and the mentoring program itself would allow for ongoing one-on-one interaction. All four of this year’s panelists served as mentors last year along with the following other C100 members:

Ming Hsu: J.T. Tai & Co. Foundation

Herman Li: Chairman of the C & L Restaurant Group (Burger King and Denny’s)

Charlie Sie: Vice President of Xerox Corporation (retired), Visiting Professor at Nankai University

Brian A. Sun: Partner at Jones Day

William Wang: CEO/Founder of Vizio

Debra Wong Yang: Former U.S. Attorney, Partner at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, LLP

Teddy Zee: Film Producer and Entertainment Executive

If you would like to learn more about how to take advantage of this opportunity, please come to the kick-off on July 9. For details go to http://committee100mentoring1.eventbrite.com/.
