Member Interview - Janet Cheung

  |   By Privy Editor

Occupation: Art Director

Based in: Shanghai

Last Education: Richmond American International University

Many of our members are bilingual, but there are few that can claim to speak seven different languages like Janet Cheung can. We had a chance to catch up with Janet, former TV anchor for the Shanghai TV show, TechMax, and learn a bit about her diverse linguistic background, her aspirations, and what it takes to be an art director for In the Cut Entertainment.

1.   What do you like about Privy or the promise Privy offers?

I like that Privy is a network that is not open to the entire public, and it's nice to know we are able to meet people who are in a similar standing. The other networks have too many people that I am not as interested in connecting with, besides existing friends. Privy allows me to actually meet new people that I would like to learn more about.

2.   Your Privy profile shows that you speak seven languages and have lived in several different cities throughout your life. Which place do you consider your home?

Home is very hard to explain. It must be where I currently reside. My heart has always been in Indonesia, but after moving homes over 28 times, so far home is where my cardboard boxes currently are.

3.   Do you speak all seven languages fluently? How did you pick them up?

My parents speak to me in Cantonese, and I reply in English; it has always been this way. We are often given funny looks when out in restaurants. I learned Shanghainese and Mandarin when I got to China in 1989, back in the REAL olden days. I took up Italian for three years in order to communicate with a grandmother of a friend of mine. Spanish was from high school, where I took it for three years. And Bahasa Indonesian is from the 10 years I spent living in Jakarta.

4.   Which restaurants and clubs would you recommend to our members for when they go through Shanghai?
