Asian Dominance in the Fashion World

By Privy Editor

Asian models are all the rage in the luxury world. Need proof? Just take a look at recent collections featured at Fashion Weeks across the globe from the top designers of upscale fashion. More and more renowned designers, such as Riccardo Tisci from Givenchy, are moving towards an Asian-centric approach to their newest collections, which means the faces of these brands are becoming decidedly more Asian as evidenced by the All-Asian Model lineup in the Spring/Summer 2011 Givenchy Haute Couture collection (above).

Known for his cutting edge fashion and detailed and provacative casting, Riccardo Tisci wowed the Paris Fashion Week crowd by utilizing an Asian-only cast of models for his show.

From the Givenchy press release:

"The Spring/Summer 2011 Givenchy Haute Couture collection by Riccardo Tisci draws its primary inspiration from Japan and particularly the work of the late legendary Butoh dancer Kazuo Ohno. Ohno's art was defined by languid, melancholic yet powerful choreography and a distinctive masculine/feminine contrast. At once fragile and flamboyant, Ohno's characters were often female and always forces of nature. To crystallize his vision, Riccardo Tisci chose the crane, a symbol in Asian art and cross-cultural harbinger of good luck and immortality, which he offset with elements borrowed from the hard-edged, futuristic world of Gundam fighters. The result is a collection of 10 ensembles that appear delicately romantic when seen from the front, but are grounded by a technological, robotic charge in fluorescent yellow or fuchsia when viewed from behind."

Furthermore, to coincide with Asia's rising influence in the world of luxury goods, more and more Western brands are moving to feature Asian faces in ad campaigns and runway shows in the biggest fashion markets, including New York and Paris. Fashion brands are keen to building their global and trendy image by connecting to the Asian sector by presenting them with familiar faces.

With the influx of an Asian presence in the fashion scene, many fashion experts forecast that it is only a matter of time until Asians complete the next step and become mainstream in their exposure.
