Privy 5 Overview
The Carlyle named its bar Bemelmans Bar after Ludwig Bemelman - author and illustrator of the Madeline books, whose murals of animals are found frolicking whimsically on these bar walls. This delightful tongue-in-cheek daubing provides a foil for what could be perceived as a palpable bastion of post-war bourgeoisie dissipation. We are talking leather banquettes, nickel-trimmed glass tables, gold leaf ceilings and white jacketed waiters. This bar menu is notable for having ex Per Se's Brian Van Flandern put his stamp on it. A Dutch drinks company ranked him the No. 2 bartender in the world, in homage to his Flaming Dutchman. Sounds like a drink from the Pirates of the Caribbean movie but it is delicious.
