At Tian Jia they're famous for serving only toro (meat from the fatty portions of the belly of blue fin tuna). When a restaurant specializes in something, they better be good and at Tian Jia the results are incredibly tasty. Unlike all-you-can-eat sushi places, Tian Jia is all about the quality. The menu consists of o-toro (the fattiest part), and chu-toro, (a more lean cut). They also offer toro-shio, which is toro marinated in lemon and sea salt. The Japanese owners of the restaurant take their craft very seriously which means that the fish is imported from the famous Tsujiki Fish Market in Japan so that the diner gets only the tastiest and best quality toro in town. Best of all, Tian Jia offers a prix fix menu which has 6 slices of sashimi, a large snow crab leg, a light hotpot with cabbage and cod that doubles as a base for udon, a bowl of chirashi, and a bowl of ice cream for 250 RMB. You can also go big and have the 380 RMB set menu that comes with an additional 5 pieces of nigiri. Simple decor, efficient service, and arguably the best sashimi in Shanghai can be found at a restaurant that singer Van Ness Wu sums up as "amazing o-toro for very reasonable prices." The fact that they recently opened restaurants in Suzhou and Beijing, to go along with the four in Shanghai (Xintiandi, Zhongshan Park, and Pudong), is a testament to their well deserved popularity.
